About Me

I have been teaching in different capacities since 1999.  My career began as a support teacher between a first and second grade classroom.  I worked with students who were new to the country from Mexico.

For the next few years, my placement was in a first grade classroom where the English language students were serviced in a mainstream setting.  In 2004, I helped start a dual language program at the school where I was working. The first class was started in kindergarten.  I followed them to first grade as their English teacher.

My next assignment was as a bilingual resource teacher.  In that position, native Spanish speaking students were given support learning to read in their native language.  The native English speaking students in the dual language program who struggled in Spanish acquisition were given additional Spanish vocabulary lessons.  The other students that I worked with while serving in that position were second through fifth grade Spanish speaking students who were new to the country. Those students were serviced by using the knowledge and reading abilities they had already acquired to aid their learning in English.

I also worked as a curriculum coach.  In this role, I visited classrooms and helped teachers bridge the learning that had taken place from one to the other language. These lessons included a review of what they had learned in the language in which it had been instructed. The next part of these lessons included a discussion in the target language, and a follow-up activity.

Presently, I am teaching first grade in Spanish.  I develop all of my own thematic curriculum which adheres to district mandates and core curriculum standards.
